Turkmenistan has a population of 5 Million people. It is a neighbour to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Iran and Afghanistan and located on the Eastern shore of the Caspian Sea. 32% of the population live in the 10 largest cities: biggest being the capital Ashgabat (pop. 730.000).
Turkmenistan has the world´s 4th largest natural gas reserves. Galkynysh gas field is the 2nd largest gas field in the world with gas reserves exceeding 21 trillion M3. Biggest client for Turkmen gas is China.
Turkmenistan has several big export pipeline projects for natural gas (i.e. TAPI-project USD 3.3 Billion)
Turkmenistan´s oil reserves are also substantial, estimated as 700 Million tons. Existing oil refineries are from the USSR period and in need for modernization.
Turkmenistan is a net exporter of electric power to Central Asian countries. Power stations include both hydropower and thermopower stations.
Turkmenistan is the world´s 9th largest cotton producer. 50% of irrigated land is planted for cotton growing. Machinery in use include over 7.000 tractors, 5.000 cultivators and 2.200 sowing machines -- mainly from Belarus and from the U.S.A.
